Commission Process
1. Inquiry/“Inspiration Conversation”
Getting started is super easy. Simply email inquiry to MJMPaintingStudio@gmail.com.
When possible, please include a detailed description of your project and the desired material (pencil drawing, acrylic painting, mural on brick, etc.). Letting me know the ideal size and deadline for you project will also help me provide you with the most accurate quote possible. Please share any relevant reference imagery that might help me understand the basic concept of your project including personal or professional photos, sketches, interior/exterior images.
After reviewing your information, I will follow up by scheduling an “Inspiration Conversation” via phone or video chat.
An “Inspiration Conversation” gives me the opportunity to connect with you in order to grasp the general “vibe” or “vision” of your project. Sharing as much relevant information as you can ensures that I’ll be able to arrive at a final design as quickly as possible.
2. Estimate
After your Inquiry/Inspiration Session I will email you an estimate and possibly a Project Agreement depending on the complexity of your idea.
3. Signed Agreement/Design Retainer
For jobs based on the direct recreation of an image (ie. Paintings of pets, landscapes, etc) a 50% Retainer is due upon the signed return of your Agreement. At least one high quality image is required for me to start developing your custom artwork.
If your project requires "Design" an additional Design Agreement will be negotiated and small Design Retainer will be requested. (See below) The Design Retainer is applied toward the time spent doing preliminary research, sketches, and making revisions. Upon receiving the Signed Agreement and Design Retainer I can begin working up designs for your approval.
4. Design Process and Sketches
Many jobs require preliminary sketches to establish a clear vision. Design Support is the phase where ideas are worked out and edited.
Your Design Retainer covers the cost of a few designs (1-2) based on our conversations and shared inspirational imagery. Through multiple exchanges we will work together to come up with the most desirable layout for your job. I generally allow up to 3 minor revisions to be made to a selected design with additional hours billed at $75 per hour.
The finalized Design usually serves as a general guide for your final piece. That being said, please understand that the creative process is fluid and often requires subtle adjustments made to color and composition in order to truly capture the look or feel of your idea. At this stage I like to remain communicative and collaborative to ensure we’re on the same page to make sure your custom art is perfect!
5. Retainer
A 50% Retainer is due in order to get started working on your final design. If working on a mural, the Retainer is necessary to begin scheduling dates and sourcing materials.
6. Art Making
Depending on the job, this either takes place at my studio or on site for the creation of a mural. Working within a controlled studio environment ensures the timely execution of all the paintings and drawings I make. While working on site is completely different, I do request as much consistency and consideration on your part as possible. The more mellow things are, the faster I can complete the job and sooner you’ll be able to enjoy your finished piece!
7. Final Payment
Final payment is due upon the completion of a job.
Email any additional questions directly at MJMPaintingStudio@gmail.com and I can’t wait to hear from you!
